Background
Originally built in 1971 as Sacramento County's Girls' School, the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center provides supervision and a highly structured rehabilitation program for delinquent youths (both girls and boys) in a safe and controlled environment.
Since its construction, the Youth Center has under gone modifications that have doubled the size of the facility, but currently, more youths are awaiting placement at the Youth Center than can be accommodated. This lack of capacity impacts the Youth Detention Facility, where the minors awaiting admittance to the Youth Center are temporarily housed until space becomes available.
The expansion and renovation of the Warren E. Thornton Youth Center is providing additional beds and quicker placement of youths into the rehabilitation program. It also allows the County to provide greater services to the youths and their families.
