New State Regulations

Household Batteries, Fluorescent Tubes, Mercury Switches, Electronic Devices

(Universal Wastes)
Effective February 8, 2006 residents will no longer be able to put household batteries, fluorescent tubes, and other universal wastes into their garbage container.  After this date, residents must take these materials to a household hazardous waste collection facility or a recycling facility.  For information on facilities in the Sacramento area that accept these materials, click on the “Universal Wastes” link below. Notice of Proposed Rate Increase for Solid Waste Collection Customers

The Sacramento County Department of Waste Management and Recycling is proposing a rate increase that, if approved by the Board of Supervisors, would become effective July 1, 2008 and be phased in over a three year period. There are two proposals being considered, and if approved, one of two proposed rate increases will be implemented.

Fee Changes at Kiefer Landfill and North Area Recovery Station Effective January 1, 2008

NO fee of any kind for electronic devices containing Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT's) such as TV's, computer monitors and some camcorders.
NO fee of any kind for copiers, fax machines, printers, cell phones, electronic games/toys.
NO fee of any kind for up to two large appliances!
NO fee of any kind for up to four car tires!
NO fee of any kind for mixed loads containing the above items!

The non-weighed fee for all pickup trucks at both facilities is $20.00 for loads below the cab height and not exceeding beyond the end of the bed of the vehicle.

Illegal Dumping - SEE IT. REPORT IT. STOP IT.

Illegal Dumping SignageSacramento County, in partnership with the California Integrated Waste Management Board, has launched an Illegal Dumping Prevention and Enforcement Program.

Program highlights include:

  • Installation of signage, barriers, and lighting at chronic dumping sites
  • Undercover sting operations
  • Website development including a listing of licensed rubbish haulers
  • Issuance of reward monies
  • Installation of surveillance camera equipment

Illegal dumping is a crime subject to fines of up to $2,500 per incident. Help keep our community clean. A reward of up to $250 will be paid to anyone who provides information resulting in the citation, arrest or conviction of a person who illegal dumps on the public right-of-way in the unincorporated county. More Recyclables Now Accepted!

 

Sacramento County unincorporated area residents may now place more materials in their mixed recycling container.

These additional materials now being accepted are:

  • Any plastic containers #1 - #7 including margarine tubs, yogurt containers and other wide mouth containers.
  • Plastic shopping bags, shrink wrap, clear plastic windows in toy packaging. These materials must be placed in a clear or semi-clear plastic bag that is then tied closed at the top.
  • Plastic toys that display the #1 - #7 symbols. Batteries and motors from toys must be removed and properly recycled or disposed of before recycling the toy.
  • Shredded paper placed in a clear or semi-clear plastic bag that is then tied closed at the top.
  • Wax coated milk, juice, fruit punch, lemonade, tea, etc. cartons.
