Kiefer Landfill - Hazardous/Unacceptable Materials

Antifreeze, auto batteries, motor oil, latex paint and other universal wastes are accepted at Kiefer Landfill, Tuesdays – Saturdays, 8:30 AM – 4 PM for no charge. This service is for residents only. Click here for details. Note: Residents may bring 25 or less fluorescent tubes to this free drop off area.
Commercial customers must call 916-876-9458 for an appointment.

Other household hazardous waste is accepted at the North Area Recovery Station. Go to the North Area Recovery Station Household Hazardous Waste page for more information.

Loads are subject to inspection to assure compliance with State and County regulations.

Site personnel will require you to leave unacceptable hazardous waste in your vehicle when leaving the landfill. Such requests will be made to assure the safety of our customers and employees, and to maintain the environmental security of the landfill. Please refer to the list of agencies below for assistance in properly handling hazardous wastes.

The following materials are NOT accepted at the landfill:

  • All liquids
  • Friable asbestos
  • Gas cylinders (corked)
  • Loads of detergent
  • Radioactive materials
  • Fluorescent tubes (if more than 25 per load)
  • 55-gallon drums (accepted if ends are cut out and drum is crushed)
  • Septic waste
  • Soil loads in excess of 10 cubic yards (must have prior approval; call 916-875-4527)

Alternatives for Disposal of Liquids and Hazardous Wastes

  • Use residential products as intended and throw empty containers in the garbage.
  • Purchase non-hazardous products whenever possible.
  • Consolidate paints into a single container and bring to a household hazardous waste facility.
  • Residents with County provided waste management service (single-family and duplex homes) can recycle used motor oil and filters as part of the curbside recycling program.
  • Used motor oil is also accepted at a number of drop-off locations. Call 1-800-CLEANUP for the nearest location.
