Background

The Elk Grove Landfill accepted waste from residential and commercial sources from 1961 – 1978 and was operated by a private firm. The Sacramento County Department of Waste Management & Recycling is currently responsible for post-closure management of this closed facility. The County completed final closure in 1992. This included final cover grading, drainage and a landfill cap designed to prevent infiltration of rainwater into the garbage. In 1993, a landfill gas control system and flare was installed. In 1996/97 the County prepared the site for installation of a bike trail and public parking area to enhance use of the property.

Site Information

  • Elk Grove landfill is located on the corner of Bond & Waterman Road. The closed landfill is adjacent to properties owned by private residents and the Elk Grove Community Services District.
  • The landfill site covers 37 acres. Garbage occupies 33 acres to a depth of 25 to 30 feet.
  • The landfill contains approximately 930,000 cubic yards or 465,000 tons of garbage.
  • Final closure of the landfill was completed in 1992. This includes final cover grading and drainage to prevent rainfall infiltration into the garbage. This reduces the potential for methane production and for landfill leachate to reach local groundwater.
  • In January 1993, a landfill gas system plant was installed at the site. This includes installation of six landfill gas extraction wells followed by construction of a complete landfill gas extraction system and flare in April 1993.
  • In 1996/97, at the request of the Community Services District, a bike trail was constructed adjacent to the creek. In addition, a public parking area was constructed immediately north of the landfill.
