A: Owners of multi-family homes (those with 5 or more units on one parcel) such as apartments, townhouses and condominiums are required to provide recycling services for residents. Check with the manager or owner of your unit for more information.

Q: Can I get a dumpster?

A: The County does not provide dumpster service as part of overall residential waste management service for single-family and duplex homes. Dumpster service is provided by private waste haulers who are permitted by the County. Check the Yellow Pages listing under Garbage for a listing of waste haulers who provide service in Sacramento.  Dumpsters must be placed on private property and not within County right-of-way.

Note: Single-family and duplex homes must have regular County-provided garbage service and cannot opt for dumpster service.

Q: I don't have space for three containers, what can I do?

A: According to a survey, 90% of residents feel that their storage capability is good, fair or excellent. If you are having storage problems for garbage, green waste and mixed recycling containers, you can pursue the following options:

Request Smaller Containers: Residents can request 38-gallon containers for garbage, green waste and mixed recycling. These containers have less height than 90-gallon containers but are just as wide.

Share Containers: It may be possible for you to share containers with your neighbors. Perhaps you could store the green waste container and your neighbor could store the mixed recycling container.

Removal: Residents who have no room at all for green waste or mixed recycling containers can request that these containers be removed.

Q: What plastics can I put in my recycling container?

A: Currently, the County program accepts all plastic food and beverage containers #1 - #7. Examples of acceptable containers include soft drinks and sport drinks, beer and other malt beverages, wine coolers and distilled spirit coolers, water bottles, fruit drinks, coffee and tea drinks, milk and juice jugs, shampoo and conditioner bottles, detergent and bleach bottles, margarine tubs, yogurt containers and other wide mouth containers, film plastics (must be placed in a clear plastic bag with the top tied shut) including clean plastic bags from grocery stores, shrink wrap (non-agricultural and non-food storage), new products plastic wrap, plastic windows from packaging such as windows from new toys packaging and plastic toys displaying the #1 - #7 symbols (batteries, oil, fluids, etc. must be removed and properly disposed of prior to recycling the plastic toy).

There are many different kinds of plastic products and most are labeled with what appears to be a recycling symbol. This symbol does not mean that the product is recyclable. These recycling arrows are only an identification system for "potential recycling."

The technology exists to recycle other types of plastic, but at this time there is not a cost-effective system in place to collect and transport these materials to an end-user for recycling. The County is continually researching opportunities to add other types of plastic to the list of materials currently accepted in the curbside recycling program.

Q: What can I do about theft of curbside recyclables?

A: A full-time Sheriff's Detective is assigned to the Department of Waste Management & Recycling to enforce all solid waste management laws within the County. This includes a program to reduce scavenging of curbside recyclables.

If you would like to report an incident of scavenging call the Recycling Coordinator at 916-875-7165, and leave a message. You will receive a callback and we will take action to monitor your street and ticket any scavengers when possible.

What happens if someone leaves their garbage/recycling/green waste containers out beyond their service day?

A:  Residents are requested to move their containers back to their sideyard, backyard or garage immediately after their service day to keep streets free of obstructions and help keep the neighborhoods clean. In the occasional case that a container is left out beyond service day, the property owner will receive a written request to move the container(s). This usually solves the problem. For repeated problems, please contact customer service at 875-5555.
