How to Be Storm Ready
FEMA IS UPDATING FLOOD MAPS YOU MAY REQUIRE FLOOD INSURANCE FEMA is implementing its Map Modernization Program--a nationwide conversion of existing Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) into Digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps (DFIRMs). The DFIRMS are more precise than the current hand-drawn maps and many properties near a flood area boundary may be mapped into or out of a Special Flood Hazard Area. FIND YOUR PROPERTY ON THE NEW DIGITAL FLOOD INSURANCE RATE MAPS DELTA LEVEE DEACCREDITATION Additionally FEMA made the decision to de-accredit many the levees protecting several Delta islands, including Hood, Courtland, and Grand Island. Properties protected by levees in these communities will be remapped into –high-risk Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) concurrent. DELTA LEVEE DE-ACCREDITATION HISTORY FLOOD INSURANCE We anticipate the new maps will become effective approximately August of 2012. Flood insurance is mandatory for properties backed by a federally-insured mortgage. All owners of properties in Special Flood Hazard Areas are urged to carry flood insurance. BUILDING RESTRICTIONS Once the DFIRMs become effective, all new structures in the FEMA floodplain must be constructed at least 1.5 feet above the floodplain elevation. Permits to construct houses and commercial buildings at the ground surface can be issued up until the day the DFIRMs become effective, provided a levee risk disclosure declaration is recorded on the property by the owner.
