The Sacramento region is historically known for flooding. In the past 20
years, our area has experienced significant, sometimes devastating, flooding, most
notably in 1995, 1997, and early 2006.
- In 1995, heavy rains hit the Sacramento area causing wide-spread
localized flooding, in particular in the Arcade, Morrison, Florin, Union and
Dry Creeks.
- Two years later, a series of tropical storms hit the valley, causing the
Cosumnes River to crash through levees in 24 places.
- Most recently, in early 2006, heavy rains caused wide-spread localized
flooding, and although this flood event was not of the magnitude of those in
the past, it did cause residents to be vigilant and question their
individual storm readiness.
More than 217 square miles of Sacramento County is within the 100-year floodplain and, in addition, many areas within the county have local flood
hazard areas. The 100-year floodplain is shown on the Flood
Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and the darker shaded areas are known as Special Flood
Hazard Areas (SFHAs).

Flood Control Agency for additional information about Sacramento's flood
risk.
