Natomas Floodplain Remap

October 2008 - The following maps outline the areas that will be affected by the levee decertification.

For City and County residents of Sacramento in the Natomas Area:

June 2008 - The proposed modified flood elevation determinations affecting the Flood Insurance Rate Map and Flood Insurance Study for Sacramento County is considered final. The final Base Flood Elevations will be published in the Federal Register as soon as possible and the new maps will be effective December 1, 2008. For details, read the FEMA letter.

January 2008 - The Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that the levees surrounding the Natomas Basin do not meet the requirements for an AR flood zone designation. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will now move forward with an AE flood zone designation.

October 2007 - The City, Sacramento County and Sutter County have received word that our application for A-99 Flood Zone Designation for the Natomas Basin has been denied. The Federal Emergency Management Agency explained the criteria that they used to make this decision differed from previous remapping efforts done by the City and has requested that the City and Sacramento and Sutter Counties apply for an AR Flood Zone Designation.

Next Steps:
  • FEMA will proceed with mapping Natomas as an AE flood zone .
  • Flood insurance will not be required until the new maps go into effect (anticipated December 2008). However, the County strongly encourages all Sacramento property owners to purchase a flood insurance policy. Natomas area residents still qualify to purchase lower-cost Preferred Risk Policy. Residents who own homes built before 1978, when the initial flood insurance rate maps for the basin were completed, should purchase flood insurance before December 2008 to avoid higher insurance rates.

What would an AE designation mean for Natomas?
Flood Insurance will be required when the new maps go into effect (anticipated December 2008) All new structures would be required to be built one and a half feet above the base flood elevation.
