Water Meters

Water Meters are a federal requirement. In 1992, U. S. Congress passed the Central Valley Project Improvement Act, which requires all Bureau of Reclamation water contractors to implement metered billing by 2014. The Sacramento County Water Agency (SCWA) is a bureau contractor. Since 1992, state law has required water meters to be installed in all new construction. As a result, about 75 percent of the homes in the SCWA's service areas already have water meters. The SCWA is developing procedures to phase-in water meters on un-metered homes in our service area at an estimated installation rate of 1200 meters per year.
The Benefits of Metered Water Billing

All SCWA customers will benefit from water metering. Metering will:

  • Encourage efficient water use among customers;
  • Ensure that customers enjoy a high quality and reliable water source for decades to come; and
  • Provide more equitable charges for water service.

Meters will allow customers to pay for what they actually use. Customers then can directly benefit from efficient water use measures they choose to implement.

Keeping our Customers Involved

As the metering program continues, the Sacramento County Water Agency will be taking necessary steps to keep you informed about the program and the installation process.

If you are interested in being contacted about future public meetings, please let us know by e-mail.

What Can I Do to Use Less Water?

To help you use water more efficiently, the Sacramento County Water Agency offers a free water use survey to SCWA water customers. A certified water auditor will visit your home to:

  • Review your water use
  • Check your irrigation system, and
  • Inspect for water leaks and offer water saving tips specific to your property.

Customers receive a written report of findings and recommendations, and a 12 month irrigation schedule. Call 772-2226 to schedule your free water use survey.
